Oil on canvas
The image originates from an online newspaper article from July 2012 dealing with protests in Barcelona against the
European Union’s banking deal with Spain. In particular people protesting were in favor of the independence of
Catalonia from the rest of Spain, a claim which has gained stronger support among population with the severing
crisis. The big format (250cm*320cm) of the painting refers to its historical role model, the “the nightwatch” by Rembrandt (363 cm*437cm) from 1642. Besides the big format and the pointy flag sticking out of the crowed as a hint for the location, the context of the two paintings is the main parallel. In fact, both are showing the process of independence from the main ruler Spain.
